    The Day of Long Odds

So, it’s my birthday this Friday the 13th and I decided to share some astrological insight into yours truly using an adaptation of the entry for August 13 in the book The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers.

The 13th day of August is labelled as The Day of Long Odds in this book. Now, I am no follower of astrology and am usually rather cynical of the esoteric world, but I do find the allusions to my life quite unsettling in the below excerpt. What do you think

    Your Drink of Choice

We all enjoy our nocturnal escapades with a touch of alcohol from time to time. Some of us more than others, but most of the time we are completely unaware of what we are consuming. By the end of this alcoholic exposé, perhaps you shall be more enlightened by some standard – and some bizarre – facts on your drink of choice.

Let us first dispel a few myths about alcohol consumption. Firstly, contrary to popular belief, alcohol does not destroy brain cells and in some cases has been proven to be associated with improved cognitive functioning. A “beer belly” is not caused by the ingestion of beer, or any alcohol for that matter, but rather by eating too much food.

Google has recently been promoting their Search Story concept, which has spurned a whole bunch of cute and funny search stories. I also particularly enjoyed this one by a friend, ianaarondavidson.

Anyhow, I decided to try my hand at it late one Friday evening after a glass of wine and came up with this. Please enjoy. I might make another one soon. Probably.

    Cape Town Restaurant Autumn/Winter Specials

    Latest update: 1 July 2010

We all love a good special and, come winter, Cape Town restaurants usually provide a great selection of them to patrons. This year, however, seems to be a little different. With the upcoming Football World Cup, many restaurants seem to be extending current specials only till the end of May and I can’t say I blame them; what with the sketchy statistics about how many visitors are expected in the host cities and all.

However, many of the restaurants are still offering specials extending through all of the winter months, and my dear friend, Karen Hilliard, is superb at compiling lists of these. With her permission I am reproducing this list below and will update it as winter passes

Renewing a Driver’s License at Gallows Hill, Green Point

Overall my experience was not as dire as I am sure we have all come to expect from South African bureaucracies. That is not to say that I could not instantly point out any number of inefficiencies in the incumbent system, but I think I am mostly grateful that I managed to spend under an hour in the rather depressing building that is Gallows Hill Traffic Department in Green Point, Cape Town.

I arrived just before 8am this morning and joined a rather short queue, which – for a change – everyone seemed to understand the concept of. The doors opened shortly after 8am and I was directed to the Enquiries counter to my left by a scarily efficient security guard who failed to hear my objections…

    Capetonians

Being the total geek perfectionist that I am, I wanted to contextually link my bio to a page describing the typical Capetonian, but was stumped by the complete lack of any definition for one on the WWW. Even Urban Dictionary returned nothing beside the generic etymological definition, “Someone from Cape Town”.

So, in my efforts to link to something more substantial, I decided to write a post describing the typical Capetonian myself

Waka Waka Eh Eh, Welcome to South Africa

This brilliant article was written by SuperSport’s Peter Davies, and reproduced via Dan Bailey.

    Dear World Cup visitors,

Now that you are safely in our country you are no doubt happily realising you are not in a war zone. This may be in stark contrast to what you have been bracing yourself for should you have listened to Uli Hoeness or are an avid reader of English tabloids, which as we all know are only good for wrapping fish ‘n chips and advancing the careers of large-chested teens on page three.

As you emerge blinking from your luxury hotel room into our big blue winter skies, you will surely realise you are far more likely to be killed by kindness than by a stray bullet. Remember that most of the media reports you have read, which have informed your views on South Africa, will have been penned by your colleagues. And you know what journos are like, what with their earnest two thousand word opuses on the op-ed pages designed to fix this country’s ills in a heartbeat. Based on exhaustive research over a three-day visit.

Funnily enough, we are well aware of the challenges we face as a nation and you will find that 95% of the population is singing from the same song-sheet in order to ensure we can live up to our own exacting expectations. We are also here to look after you and show you a good time. Prepare to have your preconceived notions well and truly shattered. For instance, you will find precious few rhinos loitering on street corners, we don’t know a guy in Cairo named Dave just because we live in Johannesburg, and our stadiums are magnificent, world-class works of art.Which is obviously news to the Sky TV sports anchor who this week remarked that Soccer City looked ‘ a bit of a mess’. She didn’t realize the gaps in the calabash exterior are to allow in natural light and for illumination at night, and not the result of vandalism or negligence. The fact that England, the nation which safely delivered Wembley Stadium two years past its due date, is prepared to offer us South Africans advice on stadium-readiness should not be surprising.

The steadiest stream of World Cup misinformation has emanated from our mates the Brits over the past couple of years. If it’s not man-eating snakes lurking in Rooney’s closet at the team’s (allegedly half-built) Royal Bafokeng training base, then it’s machete-wielding gangs roaming the suburbs in search of tattooed, overweight Dagenham dole-queuers to ransack and leave gurgling on the pavement. In fact what you are entering is the world’s most fascinating country, in my opinion. I’m pretty sure you will find that it functions far more smoothly, is heaps more friendly and offers plenty more diversions than you could possibly have imagined. In addition to which, the population actually acts like human beings, and not like they are being controlled by sinister forces from above which turns them into bureaucratically-manipulated robots.Plus we have world’s most beautiful women. The best weather. Eight channels of SuperSport. Food and wine from the gods themselves. Wildlife galore. (Love the Dutch team’s bus slogan: “Don’t fear the Big 5; fear the Orange 11”).

Having said all that, Jo’burg is undoubtedly one of the world’s most dangerous cities. Just ask those Taiwanese tourists who got out of their hire car to take close-up snaps of tawny beasts at the Lion Park a few years back. Actually, ask what’s left of them. And did you know the chances of being felled by cardiac arrest from devouring a mountain of meat at one of our world class restaurants has been statistically proven to be 33.3% higher in Jozi than in any other major urban centre not built upon a significant waterway? It’s true. I swear. I read it in a British tabloid.

Having recently spent two years comfortably cocooned in small town America, I’m only too aware of how little much of the outside world knows about this country. The American channel I used to work for has a massive battalion of employees descending on World Cup country. It has also apparently issued a recommendation to its staff to stay in their hotels when not working.Given that said corporation is headquartered in a small town which many say is “best viewed through the rear-view mirror”, I find the recommendation, if it’s true, to be utterly astounding. In fact I don’t believe it is true. Contrary to the global stereotype, the best Americans are some of the sharpest people in the world. The fact they have bought most tickets in this World Cup proves the point.

Of course I have only lived in Johannesburg, city of terror and dread, virtually all my life, so don’t have the in-depth knowledge of say, an English broadsheet journalist who has been in the country for the weekend, but nevertheless I will share some of my observations gleaned over the years.Any foreign tourist or media representative who is worried about his safety in South Africa should have a word with the Lions rugby fans from last year, or the Barmy Army cricket supporters (lilywhite hecklers by day, slurring, lager-fuelled lobsters by night). They managed just fine, just like the hundreds of thousands of fans who have streamed into the country over the past fifteen years for various World Cups, Super 14 matches, TriNations tests and other international events.

Negligible crime incidents involving said fans over said period of time.Trivia question: which country has hosted the most global sporting events over the past decade and a half? You don’t need me to answer that, do you?

In addition. Don’t fret when you see a gaggle of freelance salesmen converge on your car at the traffic lights (or robots as we like to call them) festooned with products. You are not about to be hijacked. Here in Mzansi (nickname for SA) we do a lot of our purchasing at robots. Here you can stock up on flags, coat hangers, batteries, roses for the wife you forgot to kiss goodbye this morning and a whole host of useful merchandise.Similarly, that guy who runs up as you park the rental car outside the pub intends no malice. He’s your car guard. Give him a buck or two and your vehicle will be safe while you refuel for hours on our cheap, splendid beer. Unless someone breaks into it, of course.

We drive on the left in this country. Exercise caution when crossing the road at a jog-trot with 15 kilograms of camera gear on your back. Exercise common sense full stop. Nothing more. Nothing less. If you want to leave wads of cash in your hotel room like our Colombian friends, don’t be surprised if it grows wings.Bottomline. Get out there and breathe in great lusty lungfuls of this amazing nation. Tuck into our world-class food and wines. Disprove the adage that white men can’t dance at our throbbing, vibrant night-clubs. Learn to say hello in all eleven official languages. Watch at least one game in a township. You will not be robbed and shot. You will be welcomed like a lost family member and looked after as if you are royalty. Ask those Bulls rugby fans who journeyed to Soweto recently. With a dollop of the right attitude, this country will change your life.

It’s Africa’s time. Vacate your hotel room. Join the party.Waka waka eh eh.

Brilliant! I was expecting the worse but was pleasantly surprised, well acted and they nailed it. All with a South African flavor as well from BEE to an Afrikaans Dwight who spent some time in the Army.

All done by NotOnTV, which is a new youtube channel providing local comedy content that you largely won’t find on SA TV because it would be deemed ‘unPC’ or too ‘sensitive’ for SA TV viewers.

The NotOntv team pays homage to Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s ‘The Office’, by imagining what a South African version of the 2001 ground-breaking comedy could be like, with this 10 minute pilot.

    Jardine Restaurant on Bree

    Restaurant Review:

This review is part of several which will form part of the Cape Town Autumn/Winter Restaurant Specials Series. For a list of the restaurants in Cape Town offering Autumn/Winter Specials please see this post on ohso.
Last night was one of those evenings where my "bon vivant and epicurean" tendencies led to a mild ravaging of my credit card, Muriel*. I, however, have no regrets, as my experience at Jardine Restaurant on Bree Street in Cape Town was nothing short of perfection. From the impeccable service, to the exquisite attention to detail on our plates, it was the recipe for a perfect date night and certainly one of my best gastronomic experiences.
It was the first time I have dined at this establishment, but it certainly will not be my last. We began the evening with a glass each of one of Graham Beck's Methóde Cap Classique sparkling wines, the Blanc de Blancs Vintage, a 100% delicious Chardonnay offering, before receiving the amuse bouche, a cauliflower spoom with a spicy dressing consisting of a soy-based sauce, flavoured with chilli and garlic. If I could have made a meal out of the amuse bouche alone, I would have.
Jardine is currently running one of Cape Town's grand winter specials where they are offering a Luduma 3-course set menu for R150**. Upon hearing the evening's 3-course selection, I was sold and promptly rubbed Muriel reassuringly.
You may frown condescendingly at what I am about to reveal next, but I upheld the Cape tradition of corkage, even at an upstanding restaurant like Jardine. This is in no way a negative indication of Jardine's winelist, which from my perusal looks excellent, but rather a combination of the fact that there was a box of forlorn looking Kleine Zalze wines staring at me on my way out the door (having recently been selected as a Kleine Zalze For The Love of Wine Ambassador) and the fact that Muriel has had a rather rough month. Corkage it seems, is not just a contentious issue for me, and I will be sure to accept the suggested wine pairings at Jardine the next time I dine there.
But the R50 corkage offering at Jardine won over and we opened up a bottle of 2009 Kleine Zalze Merlot to accompany our following courses. It was far from a bad option, as its smoothness seemed to perfectly accompany the rest of the meal:
The first course was a Confit duck leg terrine, with orange pudding, pistachio soil and baby turnips. The plate was dressed beautifully and the terrine was superb.
The main course consisted of an oxtail and short rib faggot (meatball) with smoked potato puree, carrot puree and a spinach bundle. The oxtail and short rib were slow cooked on the bone until the meat fell off, before being bundled into the faggot, which had an indescribably succulent flavour resulting in an absolutely exquisite experience.
We finished off our meal with a caramelised apple and cinnamon tart, accompanied by hazelnut ice cream and vanilla panna cotta. I was, by this stage, completely full of deliciousness, but Jardine insisted on taking this a step further by bringing a beautiful strip of driftwood which held two coconut dusted hazelnut chocolate balls, stawberries and nougat with macadamian nuts and cranberries.
The meal was exceptional value for money and thoroughly enjoyed. Even Muriel thought so and behaved becomingly when the bill arrived.
    * This way, when my transactions are not approved, I can berate my credit card by saying, "You're terrible, Muriel!"
** You should confirm the special's availability when making your reservation.

    The Hussar Grill, Camps Bay

    Restaurant Review:

This review is part of several which will form part of the Cape Town Autumn/Winter Restaurant Specials Series. For a list of the restaurants in Cape Town offering Autumn/Winter Specials please see this post on ohso.

During my varsity years I attempted vegetarianism for a year. Not because I loved animals, but rather because I hated plants. Thankfully my Leonine proclivities and O-positive blood type brought me back to the realms of omnivorism, otherwise I might not have been able to truly appreciate the spectacular dishes served up to me recently at The Hussar Grill in Camps Bay.

I have paid them two visits over the past few weeks and was greatly satisfied with both meals I enjoyed there. The first was an impromptu dinner for two and the second was on Mothers Day where I made a reservation for 18.

Before I continue, a brief background on the Hussar Grill:

This chain of grillrooms established their first restaurant in Rondebosch in 1964 and has since expanded to several other locations around Cape Town, namely Greenpoint, Camps Bay and Willowbridge (in the Tyger Valley Area). They are the epitome of a grillroom with their fine selection of cuts and grills served alongside a wide arrange of accompaniments and alternatives. They also sport a very decent (Platinum Award winning) winelist.

They are currently offering a two course R99 special of either 1kg Slow Roasted Beef Ribs or Grilled Kingklip in Lemon or Garlic Butter. Both are served with complimentary Creamed Spinach, Cinnamon Butternut and your choice of 'bottomless' Chips or New Potatoes followed with a Chocolate Mousse dessert.

On my first visit I did not partake of this special, but rather indulged in their version of the Chateaubriand, a perfectly cooked fillet served with a delectable béarnaise sauce and my choice of starch, which was mash. It is subsequently doused in Brandy on the table and set alight. The fillet was truly cooked to perfection and literally melted in my mouth. I ate this accompanied with Groote Post's Old Man's Red Blend (2009) a Cabernet Sauvignon based blend which was very decent for a moderately priced red blend.

As is custom at The Hussar Grill, we were also served with Sweet Potato Crisps and Rosemary/Garlic Olives on arrival and walked through the specials and recommendations. This was no exception on my second visit on Mothers Day where the set menu of the day was served alongside the regular à la carte menu.

The set menu included the following options for R115, a very sweet deal indeed (and my main motivation for selecting it as the location for our Mothers Day luncheon):

    On Arrival:

    • The aforementioned crisps and olives with a glass of pink bubbly

    Starters:

    • Calamari (I cannot remember the exact serving specifications, but it looked delicious)
    • French Onion Soup served with a Mature Cheddar Encrusted Crouton

    Mains

    • 500g Slow-Roasted Beef Ribs
    • Kingklip served on Mash with Lemon Butter and Wilted Greens
    • Parmesan Encrusted Chicken Breast

    Dessert

    • Chocolate Mousse served with Peppermint Crisp Shavings
    • Malva Pudding with Cream

I ate from the set menu choosing the options emphasised above. The soup was perfectly seasoned and was definitely enhanced by the crouton which accompanied it. The ribs were beautifully cooked and highly recommended (and form part of the current special mentioned above). I could not even fathom eating dessert by the end of the main course so cannot comment much on that.

My only criticism for The Hussar Grill on that particular day was the comparatively lacklustre service, but the quality of the food and the company more than made up for it, and we spent over 5 hours drinking wine, chatting and indulging in our delicious meals.

As an added bonus, The Hussar Grill has no corkage charge. If you are a meat-eater, you should really check it out.

    Bon appetit.

    Autumn Specials at Chenin Restaurant

    Restaurant Review

This review is the first of several which will form part of the Cape Town Autumn/Winter Restaurant Specials Series. For a list of the restaurants in Cape Town offering Autumn/Winter Specials please see this post on ohso.

Chenin Restaurant in the (old) Cape Quarter Piazza is currently offering an Autumn Special, and we decided to check it out last night before heading off for a show.

For R60 you can choose between four main courses, which are served with either a complimentary glass of wine, or a pint of Boston Draught Beer. The following mains are offered in this deal:

    • 200g beef sirloin steak with potato bake and chimichurri
    • Bangers with mustard mash and caramelised onion ratatouille
    • Fish pie with peas and mash
    • Butternut ravioli with wilted greens and sage butter

These are offered with your choice of Rockfield Sauvignon BlancWelmoed Chenin Blanc or Rockfield Cabernet Sauvignon. You may also opt for a Boston Draught Beer if wine is not your thing. However, if it is, Chenin is also offering 20% off listed premium and blended wines, which are rotated regularly, but usually include at least 15 different wines at any one time according to Craig, the owner.

Myself, and my companions, all ate the beef sirloin which was cooked perfectly to our specifications (medium and medium rare) and enhanced by the delicious accompaniments. I opted for the Rockfield Cabernet Sauvignon, a smooth red which seemed destined to compliment the steak.

The staff was friendly, attentive and paid detailed attention to our requests. I feel you can always tell a lot about service by the way a glass of water is presented, and I must congratulate the staff of Chenin for managing to perfectly and quickly attend to this order (one glass of water with ice, one with ice and lemon, and the third one hot with lemon).

All in all, you cannot beat the quality of food and service gained for R60 a head. I definitely recommend checking it out. I will definitely be back soon to try something else.
